Gig Economy Earnings
App-based drivers' gross earnings commonly run 25 to 40 dollars per hour in large metros, but net pay after vehicle costs is materially lower.
Overview
Platform work pays per task with no benefits, and studies disagree on the denominator: gross hourly rates look healthy, while subtracting mileage, depreciation, waiting time and self-employment taxes pushes many drivers below local minimums in published analyses. California's Proposition 22 carved app drivers out of employee classification in exchange for guaranteed minimum earnings per engaged minute and mileage plus stipends, a model other states have watched. Multi-apping, working several platforms at once, is the common coping strategy. Figures are approximate study ranges.
