Engineer Salary (Japan)
Engineers in Japan commonly earn 3.5 to 8 million yen per year, with senior roles above 10 million at global firms and startups.
Overview
The classic pattern is the seniority ladder: fresh graduates around 3.3 to 4 million yen rising steadily with age under quasi-lifetime employment. That model is loosening, as job-hopping among younger engineers, growth-stage startups and foreign-firm offices pay for skills rather than tenure. Tokyo costs press on the lower rungs. The gap with US software pay remains large, which is why global remote work and English skills carry such premium. These indicative figures come from Japanese salary surveys.
