Real Estate Agent Earnings (United States)
United States real estate agents typically net around 40,000 to 60,000 dollars per year, with top producers above 100,000 and many part-timers far below.
Overview
Agents are mostly commission-only independent contractors splitting commissions with brokerages, so earnings track transaction counts and prices directly. The 2021 boom minted agents, the 2023 mortgage-rate freeze culled them, and the 2024 industry settlement changed how buyer-side commissions are negotiated. Median figures hide a barbell: a minority of full-time agents close most of the business, while many licensed agents transact rarely. Expenses, splits, fees and taxes come off the top. These indicative figures come from industry associations and federal self-employment data.
