Lawyer Salary (United States)
United States lawyer pay is famously bimodal: large firms start near 225,000 while many public interest and small-firm roles pay 60,000 to 90,000.
Overview
The median across all lawyers runs roughly 135,000 to 150,000, but the distribution has two peaks. First-year associates at major firms now start around 225,000 with bonuses, while legal aid, government and many solo practices pay a third of that. The path is three years of law school, commonly 130,000 dollars or more of debt, then the bar exam. The 2023 and 2024 entry markets softened in corporate work. Partners at successful firms earn multiples of associate pay after years of leveraged building. All figures are approximate and jurisdiction-dependent.
